LAURA MILLER, ETHICIST
Professionally, Laura has curated documentary work on Brazil’s warrior women, is the author of the forthcoming book AI Ethics in Action, and has had her photography selected for inclusion in The New York Times Lens: Pictured A World at 7 Billion; a time capsule project. She is the principal of Aeterne Lens (the structural evolution of her umbrella organization, NextGen Ethics) and MINDHER, the live sandbox environment dedicated to the RHEA^ Standard, human-centric AI leadership, and workplace resilience. Her work in AI ethics has been recognized across six continents, with audiences at international academic conclaves, industry groups, and forums sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Her insights have been mapped through NIST and EU AI Act public working groups. Named by RTInsights as one of the "19 Women in Real-Time Analytics and AI to Watch," she holds an MA in Philosophy with an Applied Continental Ethics focus. These days, you’ll find her out in the world, advocating for an ethical lens that belongs to the public and the future. She’ll either have a camera in hand shooting street scenes, a microphone at an AI keynote talk, or she’ll be walking through historical sites, thinking about the structural legacy left there. She might even be painting again. No matter where the future leads or what work follows, ethics will underpin it all.
// THE ETHICAL LENS
Laura Miller is an AI ethicist, philosopher, photographer, author, and entrepreneur. In her early years, she fell in love with ethics through questioning homelessness in society at age twelve, launching science projects to protect trees, and confronting the everyday struggles and structural harm she witnessed entering adulthood. She was studying fine art when the world shifted around her through a severe car accident, rendering her dominant arm useless for five years. As a result, fine art yielded to photography and the broken world she now knew she belonged to. Gone were the rose-colored glasses—and the friends she left behind as she recovered and ultimately relocated to the Midwest. It would take years for her to recognize that ethics was the true work of her lens and her narrative. As a discipline, it attempted to answer the questions captured in her images and in a world she came to see as marked by harm and disregard. As a close friend once noted: he wrote about demons, but she shot where they lived among us. He understood the demons weren't the subjects or people in her images, but the forces, the systemic architectures, that insisted they struggle. She became a degreed philosopher—an ethicist with a camera always in hand. Soon after, the world grew alongside the harm. Her ethical frameworks addressed homelessness, food access, and poverty, eventually expanding into environmental and biomedical ethics. Today, that trajectory reaches artificial intelligence and its layers of vulnerabilities, systemic harm, and emergent opportunities. She became an AI ethicist, but she carries the lived experience of a broken world and its rawest realities. This forensic observation is the foundation of her work in AI ethics today: identifying the invisible forces that govern lived experience.

If you are reading this, you have already seen the artistic imagery partnered with organizational language—and you didn’t balk. This space is an intentional risk. There are no flashing elements, no modern gradients, and absolutely no sales-speak.
Aeterne speaks to the universal understanding of ethics, deeply rooted in human experience and our collective struggle. Out of that struggle, we build frameworks, governance, and tools to manage corporate risk. But for Aeterne, the field that matters most is the public, human-facing world of lived experience.
While many technologists and AI ethicists are hyper-focused on developing technology that is reponsible, Aeterne asks a deeper question. We seek to understand what technology actually does in the world and its impact in our daily lives, determining the value of an innovation through its raw interactions with humanity.
Via the conceptual depth of philosophy, the immediate truth of evidence, and the practical guardrails of AI ethics, we measure the digital frontier not by its data points, but by the human essence it leaves behind, supports, or ignores.

Aeterne Lens is the culmination of years of work under the NextGen Ethics umbrella. While the name has evolved to better reflect our shift from what is next to architectural execution of the future, the core commitments remain unchanged.
